INTERVIEW W/ TAY.P
Q: Please introduce yourself to the people, where are you from and how did that mold you into the woman you are?
A: Hi everyone! I go by the name Tay.P. I am a new emerging R&B/ Soul Pop artist from Long Island, New York. I was raised on Long Island and my parents moved here from Brooklyn, NY. I am half Ecuadorian and Puerto Rican. Being a Latina growing up on LI made me a woman who is really proud of my culture and the roots that I come from. When we moved out to LI, we were the first Hispanic family to move into the neighborhood. I grew up listening to my mom blasting Salsa, Bachata, or Merengue on a Saturday morning while she cleans the whole house. But I also listened to Disco, Reggae, Reggaeton as well as R&B, and especially Freestyle during my childhood. So much of that music I heard growing up influences my sound and is a part of the woman I am today.
Q: When did you decide you wanted to do music? And what keeps you going?
A: I’ve been singing since as far as I can remember. My sister calls me “the songbird” lol. I decided to finally take music seriously back in 2021. It may sound cliché but I really asked God one day to help guide me to find my purpose and next thing I knew I was in a studio, recording my first song. Being in that environment for the first time ever instantly felt like home and that’s when I knew. It’s a high that I want to keep chasing forever. What keeps me going is the uncertainty that lies ahead. I’m excited to see where my music will take me. I accept all the blessings that come along with this beautiful journey. I can’t wait to share all my new music with everyone!
Q: Let’s talk about your new single, “Through Time”: What is the message in this song? What inspired this record?
A: The message behind “Through Time” is to keep going no matter what obstacle you may face. It’s to let people know just like everyone else I deal with anxiety/ off-days but they are not going through it alone. I wrote that song when I just began making music. I was filled with second thoughts of feeling really doubtful of myself. Dealing with imposter syndrome and feeling so embarrassed for sharing such vulnerability in my lyrics. But “Through Time” is that reassurance you want to hear, that warm hug you need when you’re feeling down. It reminds you to give yourself grace, be present and release the things you cannot control. Just be patient, baby.
Q: What makes RNB special to you?
A: RNB is special to me because it helped raise me. Some of the most monumental moments of my life are associated with RNB songs. To spending hours on MySpace picking between JoJo or a Paula DeAnda song to go on my page (the real ones know lol) to being the first thing I run to when my heart gets broken. RNB is like that bestie that always got your back. It’s that Summer Walker song when you need a good cry or when you want to sing Ashanti at the top of your lungs alone in your car. It’s fitting for any emotion you are feeling at that time. I feel privileged to witness the many different phases of RNB and how it has evolved over the years. I admire the way this genre reinvents itself and makes me excited to share my very own RNB story <3
Q: What are you working on and when can we expect it to drop?
A: I am currently working on releasing a new single called “There For You” dropping February 16th featuring FMV so look out for that! I am also planning on dropping a new music video and single with a special female artist DestinyyNicole coming out by Summer. I’ll keep that a secret until announced! And finally I plan on releasing my first ever 7 song EP by September 2024. Title will also be announced very very soon!
Let the people know where to find you. (if you can share a quote or comment to the audience)
